Strategic competence is acknowledged to be able to explain variations in language test performance. Research with adult language test-takers has shown that strategic competence has dual components: strategic knowledge and strategic processing. Of the two components, strategic processing, which is state-like, unstable, and tends to fluctuate from contexts to contexts, is more closely related to language test performance. English does not have a grammatical gender, thus having an “intrinsic predisposition towards gender-neutral forms” (Poddighe 2020, 3). Most personal nouns do not indicate a specific gender, as in the case of person or engineer. However, there are also personal nouns with lexical gender, such as king or queen (Hellinger 2001). Daudzi raksti parāda plašās lasīšanas priekšrocības angļu valodas prasmju uzlabošanā. Lai gan plašā lasīšana ir guvusi atzinību tiek praktizēta daudzās valstīs, Latvijā tā joprojām tiek maz izmantota. Šī diplomdarba mērķis ir parādīt plašās lasīšanas priekšrocības un to, cik efektīvi tā var uzlabot izglītojamo svešvalodu prasmi. Mūsdienu pasauli raksturo tehnoloģiju straujā attīstība, kā arī angļu valodas kā lingua franca statusa nostiprināšanās. Diplomdarba mērķis ir atrast rīku, kas nodrošinātu jauniešiem nepieciešamās svešvalodas prasmes. Pētījumā tika ievākti dati no 203 anketām un piecām intervijām ar mērķi noskaidrot vidusskolas skolēnu valodas apguves ieradumus. Pētījums atklāja, ka vidusskolas skolēni savā ikdienā plaši pielieto tehnoloģijas un ir atvērti tehnoloģijās balstītai svešvalodas apguvei. Tādēļ izaicinājumi, kurus rada angļu valodas kā svešvalodas apguve, piemēram, gramatika, idiomas un pareizrakstība, varētu tikt risināti ar tehnoloģiju starpniecību. Diplomdarba autore ir strādājusi par angļu valodas skolotāju astoņus gadus. Gramatika vienmēr ir sagādājusi grūtības daudziem viņas skolēniem. Daļai no viņiem nepatīk darbības vārdu formas, dažus skolēnus neinteresē lielo burtu lietojums, prievārdi vai frazālie darbības vārdi, bet citiem grūtības sagādā laiki un vārdu kārtība teikumā. Var būt dažādi iemesli, kāpēc skolēniem nepatīk angļu valodas gramatika. Nav šaubu, ka daži no viņiem vienkārši negrib mācīties. Tas varētu būt arī sava veida protests, lai parādītu citiem, ka viņi var darīt, ko grib.
